Famous Peoples Of Uttrakhand


The following are some of the famous personalities belonging to Uttarakhand who have contributed immensely to enrichment of society and their own field.


Mohan Upreti-:

He was a renowned theatre personality from a well known place called Almora, an ancient town in Kumaon Region of Uttarakhand. He is remembered for his immense contribution to the Kumaoni folk music and for his efforts towards preserving old Kumaoni Ballads, songs and of course folk traditions. The famous song “ Bedu Paako Barmasa” the base of Kumaoni culture, the mania of Kumaon Regiment was composed by Late Shri Mohan Upreti.

Gopal Babu Goshwami -:

The famous Kumaoni singer always remembered to his great creations for music all across. He is known as “The voice of Uttarakhand”. He is the only singer who is commonly popular in both the regions Kumaon and Garhwal. He has given a number of traditional songs, folk songs and matrimonial songs. Late Shri Gopal Babu Goswami ji was born in a small and beautiful town called “Chaukhutia”. “Haye teri rumaala, gulabi mukhadi” and “Jai maiya durga bhawani” were his most popular creations.

Sumitra Nandan Pant -:

Sumitra Nandan Pant(1900-1977), was renowned poet of Hindi Literature, who pioneered the Chhayawadi format of Hindi poetry. He was born in the town of Kausani in Bageshwar district. He is best known for his poem “Chidambara” for which he received the “Gyanpeeth Award”. “Nari, Bharmatma, Gramvasini” were the famous achievements of him.

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna-:

Hemvanti Nandan Bahuguna(1919-1989), was a Congress party leader and former “Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was basically from Pauri Garhwal but settled in Allahabad. In 1973, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Govind Ballabh Pant -:

Govind Ballabh Pant(1887- 1961), was a statesman of India, and Indian independence activist and on of the foremost political leaders from Uttarakhand and of the movement to establish Hindi as the national language of India. He was born in Kashipur. Four times he was a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Sundar Lal Bahuguna -:

Sundar Lal Bahuguna is born in village Maroda, near Tehri. He is a noted environmentalist, Chipko movement leader and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of Non-violence and Satyagrah. Four year has fought for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas, first as a member of the Chiplo movement in 1970s, and later spearheaded the anti Tehri Dam movement starting 1980s to early 2004. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor, on January 2009.

Jaspal Rana -:

Jaspal Rana is a renowned pistol shooter. He born in Uttarakhand and grew up in Delhi. He achieved first Gold medal in 1994 in Asian Games in Hiroshima Japan. He won a Gold Medal in men’s 25m Centre Fire Pistol with Samaresh Jung at the 2006 Commonwealth games. He is the first Indian who achieved an individual Gold medal in Olympics. In 2008 he achieved the same. In 1994, he was awarded Arjuna Award, the second highest award for achievement in sport.

Gen Bipin Chandra Joshi -:

General B C Joshi was the Chief of Army staff from 1993-1994. Commissioned in Dec 1954 in the Armored Corps, General B C Joshi has held important command and staff appointments. In addition to his military achievements, he is also known for helping in the social development of the hills especially the development of the road network in Pithoragarh’s Gangolihaat region. He was awarded and honored by Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service of the most exceptional order.

Shivani Gaura Pant -:

Gaura Pant Shivani(1924 -2003), was a renowned writer of Hindi Literature. She left behind a vast repertoire of writings that consists of novels, essays and short stories. “Lal Haveli, Aparadhini, Chaudah Phere were the most popular creations of her.
